Heart Disease Review

September 24th, 2009

Now they have always said that heart disease was an older man’s disease.  Then it was found out that women are at a higher risk for heart disease, I suspect because we are more likely to have breasts and therefore that collection of fat around the area of the heart.  This being said, they have now tested 100 African American adults and they have found that many are actually developing heart disease before the age of 50, even between the ages of 30 and 49 actually.

It’s 20 times more prevalent than you will find in Caucasian men of the same age range and otherwise, and they found that basically speaking these younger African Americans had a higher rate of heart disease than those Caucasian men and women who were between the ages of 50 and 69.  That’s a scary statistic, and frankly speaking, some would rightly blame it on diets that are common to certain areas of the country.

But at the same time, there are also Caucasian people in those areas, but frankly African Americans are found in smaller concentrations in general than Caucasians.  So frankly, one person is going to make a bigger difference.  All this considered, there is only the one study with only 100 people.  In comparison to all of the people out there, that is an extremely small number to say the least.  So I don’t put much into this study, I don’t give it much credit at this point.  It’s one of those things that I would like them to repeat it with more people and greater statistics in general.
